Your star players don't become star players by scoring 10 goals in one game. They become star players because they score one goal or make one nice pass in every game. Little things count. They build, and they become big things.

Also, Mike Babcock knows all of the answers: http://video.redwings.nhl.com/videocenter/console?catid=136&id=252206&lang=en

I really like song covers with vocal genders swapped.

...ok, sure, it's just two of 'em, but they're still wonderful.

ETA: Oh, and because it's been too long, you do know that Ghost Love Score is the best song evar, right?  I don't understand why you're not listening to it RIGHT NOW.

Benefits of being a former MMO addict [Apr. 1st, 2012|12:34 am]
How I learned to enjoy working out: "I can do way more pushups now than I could do last month. LEVEL UP!"

How I learned to enjoy shopping for clothes: "I'm going to be playing as this character for the rest of my life, so I'd better customize him so he looks the way that I like."

I should make doughy things more often. Last weekend, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the pizza dough I was making doubled as a wonderful punching bag (before I baked it, of course). Even when I repeatedly punched it with all of my strength, my hand was completely unharmed. It wasn't particularly tasty, but I felt a lot better at the end.

Therapy in unexpected places.

I just looked back at some of the Mystery hunt archives and realized that this year's writing team has a hell of a high bar to meet. All three of the most recent hunts have been incredible. I hope next weekend's hunt is able to stack up. Best of luck to Codex (yay Kevin!).

I give up.

I don't even know what I'm giving up, or why, but I do. I'm just going to spend my evenings sitting back and listening to chill jazz music for the rest of my life. 'Cause, 'ya know, why not?

At the moment, I'm faced with the perplexing dilemma of whether that's blood or chocolate on my elbow. Hrm... taste test suggests chocolate. Aaaah the difficulties of being red-green colorblind. Can't tell whether you've been a slob or if you scraped up your arm worse than you had thought.

Life is... whatever. You roll with it... whatever it is.

Oh, oh, I know what time it is. It's time for Mira's Yearbook entry from last year:

New Year's Day --
everything is in blossom!
I feel about average.

Heh, it's funny... I keep editing this entry to add more... stuff... whatever stuff... is stuff... Man... talk about whimsical. I guess your mind goes on strike when you devour 15 snickers bars over the course of 3 days, slobster McGee.

Heh, heh, fat Lord Walder, heh.

Hrm... 9:30, it's getting late. Maybe I should sleep.

Why life is worse than videogames: No do-over button.

Why life is better than videogames: No game over screens.

While it's fresh in my mind... [Aug. 21st, 2011|08:49 pm]
It's pretty incredible how close you can get to your fellow JC team members in 6 weeks, and it's equally incredible how far apart you drift even shortly after camp ends. So here's a quick shout out to the JCs I know best, because I'm feeling sentimental and y'all deserve it (even though a couple of the ones mentioned don't read LJ anymore).

Iowan Paul, Yuri, Tim!, Catherine, Jeff, Malinda -- thanks for making my time as a JC completely unforgettable. Keep kicking ass well into the future.

That is all.

MC '11 in a nutshell. AKA Youlian's yearbook entry. [Jul. 28th, 2011|05:40 pm]
When I wrote the following in my MC ’09 yearbook entry, I had no
idea just how true the words would be:

Thank you for these past for years. Nothing has made me happier
or shaped me more than this camp. Knowing that I have made
lifelong friends here makes saying goodbye so much easier.

Somehow, even though I fully expected to be back in ’11, I really did
say goodbye that year. As much as I love the people here and as deeply
as I know that Mathcamp is incredible in every sense of the word,
something has changed within me over the past two years (probably
in the past two months, actually). As unbelievable as it may sound,
camp has become just another place.

I guess everyone has to leave home eventually. I just happen to be
one of the lucky few who gets to leave precisely when he’s ready – no
sooner, and no later. To those of you whose hearts are still here, and to those of you who fell in love with Mathcamp for the first time this year, I wish
you the best of luck.  May this camp treat you as well
as it has treated me.
